How is it calculated?

R = (Vsupply − LED count × Vf) / I. Resistor power is P = I² × R. Verify against the LED datasheet and real forward-voltage tolerance.

Example

Example: With a 12 V supply, one 3 V LED and 20 mA current, the calculation is about 450 Ω; the next standard value up adds margin.

What questions does this tool answer?

  • What resistor value and wattage does an LED need?
  • How is LED Resistor calculated?
  • What inputs are needed for LED Resistor?
WHAT CHANGES THE RESULT

Check these before using the estimate

Electrical and energy calculations are not final designs by themselves. Load profile, conductor conditions, protection, efficiency and local codes must be considered together. Sorsana tools are intended for preliminary sizing and scenario comparison.

  • Continuous and surge characteristics of the real load
  • Cable length, conductor material and ambient temperature
  • Battery, charger and inverter efficiency plus usable capacity
  • Manufacturer data and applicable local electrical codes
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why choose the next standard resistor value up?+

A slightly higher resistance helps keep LED current below target as supply voltage and Vf vary.

Can I use multiple LEDs in series?+

Yes, while their combined forward voltage remains below the supply voltage.
